Sevilla en MADrid Featuring Carmen Ledesma, The Mine Shaft Tavern, Madrid, NM

Encore! In collaboration with Casa Flamenca, The Mine Shaft Tavern is thrilled to bring you Sevilla en MADrid at the historic Engine House Theater! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a living legend right in the heart of MADrid, New Mexico. Directly from Seville, Spain, flamenco superstar Carmen Ledesma is like no other. The achievements of Carmen Ledesma go back to 1960, when she made her debut at only four years of age. She trained under the legendary Enrique el Cojo, one of the founders of Seville’s unique style of flamenco dance. In 1983, she was awarded the prestigious Juana la Macarrona Prize at the National Flamenco Art Contest of Córdoba. She later went on to work with such greats as Antonio Gades in the National Ballet of Spain and in the famed companies of Mario Maya, El Farruco, and Curro Vélez, among other great dance figures. She is considered one of today’s most significant performers and one of the most recognized teachers and interpreters of the Sevillian school of flamenco. On Saturday, July 6, 2019, she takes center stage at the Engine House Theater with an amazing troupe:

This summer’s artists include: 

Juani de la Isla is a world-renowned flamenco guitarist from Isla San Fernando in southern Spain. He began his musical education studying with the great flamenco singer Rafael Romero, has been a student of the celebrated flamenco guitarist Manolo Sanlúcar, and has also been trained in the gypsy flamenco style of Morón – a small pueblo in the heart of Andalusia’s flamenco country. He has accompanied and composed for some of the greatest flamenco artists of this century. For over a decade, he was Musical Director for the popular flamenco singer “El Barrio”. His recording career includes participation on more than 100 albums with some of Spain’s finest flamenco artists as well as his solo CD, Libertad en Mis Manos. He returns for a second season with Casa Flamenca’s tablaos and our community workshop, Flamenco without Borders.

Known for the purity and authenticity of his singing, cantaor and percussionist Adrian Cabeza combines rich vocals and percussion in the tradition of cante jondo. He has performed with leading flamenco singers and dancers in his native San Fernando, Cadiz, Spain which has long been recognized as the home of many celebrated flamenco artists. His highly acclaimed solo CD, Mis Razones, spans flamenco to flamenquito. Adrian joins us for his second season with Casa Flamenca’s Summer Tablao Series.

Dancer Valeria Montes is known as La Chispa (The Spark) for her passionate and vibrant interpretation of cante flamenco and for her complex rhythmic zapateado. She began her dance studies at the age of 5 in her native Mexico studying ballet, baile folklorico, and gymnastics. She eventually moved to Spain immersing herself in the world of flamenco; she was very fortunate to study with legendary families and artists of flamenco. Winner of the prestigious Kresge Artist Fellowship for Performing Arts, she is co-founder of the Center of Music and Performing Arts Southwest (COMPAS). She serves as Artistic and Executive Director of Casa Flamenca.

Born and raised in Germany, dancer Juan Siddi currently resides in Santa Fe, NM where his high-profile presence as a flamenco dancer, choreographer, and teacher garnered him the 2011 Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Since the age of 9, he has performed and toured extensively at renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe and the United States. Juan Siddi has been described in the Santa Fe New Mexican as “a bundle of beautiful energy tempered by technique and taste.”
