All of these highly acclaimed artists, as well as Casa Flamenca Musical Director Juani de la Isla, are from the province of Cádiz in southern Spain, considered by many to be one of the great centers of the flamenco art form. All have toured internationally with some of Spain’s most prominent flamenco dance companies and all are master performers and teachers of the flamenco arts.
Also performing will be artists from Albuquerque: the renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist Juani de la Isla, flamenco dancer Valeria Montes, trombonist Micah Hood and percussionist Javier Saume.
What is a tablao?
A tablao (colloquial term for the Spanish tablado, or floorboard) is a place where flamenco shows are performed and the word tablao is a term also used to describe the platform floor on which a flamenco show is performed. Tablao venues were developed during the 1960s throughout Spain replacing the cafés cantantes, or cabarets of the 19th and early 20th century. More intimate than flamenco productions in a large theatre, tablao shows are considered the places where the most authentic flamenco performances can be experienced. Casa Flamenca’s new performance space recreates the authentic atmosphere of a Spanish courtyard tablao.
This fall’s artists include:
Juani de la Isla is a world-renowned flamenco guitarist from Isla San Fernando in southern Spain. He began his musical education studying with the great flamenco singer Rafael Romero, has been a student of the celebrated flamenco guitarist Manolo Sanlúcar, and has also been trained in the gypsy flamenco style of Morón – a small pueblo in the heart of Andalusia’s flamenco country. He has accompanied and composed for some of the greatest flamenco artists of this century. For over a decade, he was Musical Director for the popular flamenco singer “El Barrio”. His recording career includes participation on more than 100 albums with some of Spain’s finest flamenco artists as well as his solo CD, Libertad en Mis Manos. He returns for a second season with Casa Flamenca’s tablaos and our community workshop, Flamenco without Borders.
Dancer Valeria Montes is known as La Chispa (The Spark) for her passionate and vibrant interpretation of cante flamenco and for her complex rhythmic zapateado. She began her dance studies at the age of 5 in her native Mexico studying ballet, baile folklorico, and gymnastics. She eventually moved to Spain immersing herself in the world of flamenco; she was very fortunate to study with legendary families and artists of flamenco. Winner of the prestigious Kresge Artist Fellowship for Performing Arts, she is co-founder of the Center of Music and Performing Arts Southwest (COMPAS). She serves as Artistic and Executive Director of Casa Flamenca.
